BULLETIN OF THE ULSTER PLACE-NAME SOCIETY

INTRODUCTION

Nollaig Ó Muraíle

The first series of the Bulletin of the Ulster Place-Name Society [BUPNS], which appeared between the years 1952 and 1957, was largely the brainchild of Seán Mac Airt (alias John B. Arthurs). Besides being its main founder, he was also the editor. The demise of the first series (with Vol. 5, part 2, in Autumn 1957) coincided with the decline in Seán Mac Airt's health; he died of cancer, at the age of 41, in 1959. After a break of more than twenty years, a second series of the Bulletin began to appear in 1978 under the editorship of Deirdre Flanagan (who, as Deirdre Morton, had been a regular contributor to the first series since 1953). Over the next few years four volumes were published: 1 (1978) [4+58+23 pp.]; 2 (1979) [4+60+14 pp.]; 3 (1980-81) [4+73+17 pp.]; 4 (1981-2) [4+75+9 pp.]. Death again caused a break in continuity (this time of shorter duration) when Deirdre Flanagan died suddenly and tragically in March 1984. The present series (the third) - under a new main title Ainm (="name"), although retaining the designation "BUPNS" as a subtitle - was launched in 1986. Vols. 1-4 and most of Vol. 5 were edited by Ruairí Ó hUiginn before his departure in 1993 to become Professor of Modern Irish in what is now the National University of Ireland, Maynooth.
